10 Best Halloween Costumes for Adults, Pets and Kids & We Didn't Forget Safety Tips!

Posted by Taniqua Pino on Thu,Oct 15,2015 @ 01:32 PM

As a blog contributor for a home security company, October is the month the forces conspire to demand that all are reminded of the all important safety tips for Halloween. And with good reason, year after year, Halloween is the single most dangerous day for pedestrians. So while I can't just ignore the forces that be, an equally passionate voice is yelling, "Let The People Eat Cake!" or the Halloween equivalent: "Let's look at cute dogs in Halloween costumes and then eat cake... or candy."

So here is last years blog full of Halloween Safety Tips. It's fully resurrected, updated, shiny and brand new for this year. It is a valuable reminder that pedestrian deaths spike for this one day every year. Emergency rooms are filled to the brim, with preventable accidents. If you are a parent of youngsters or you are a single person with no kids in the entire neighborhood, this blog reminds us that cute little goblins and princesses are jacked up on sugar, encouraged to talk to strangers, and all other things they are usually told not to do... ever. And they might not be paying attention to you driving to your very adult Halloween Party. There is also a bunch of brand new drivers high on the adrenaline of their first holiday behind the wheel, driving to their "they-think-they-are-grown-up" Halloween party. On top of that, as with any holiday, drinking and driving becomes an issue. I promise this blog is  worth 5 minutes of your time.

Once you review the safety issues, it's on to costumes!

Best Halloween Costumes for Your Pet

 It's Pumpkin Dog!

Who wouldn't love to see Fido wearing a jack o'lantern sweater? With a full two weeks left until Halloween, there is plenty of time to style your pet right. We've seen this made for large dogs, small dogs and even cats. You can even whip up matching sets for your kids or grand kids. See full instructions for making this costume here. Or purchase one from Party City here.

The Chia Craze is still alive and well

This pup is just too cute. An added plus is it's built in camouflage. Hopefully this dog isn't smart enough to realize he can't be detected and use it to pounce on the faily cat. Find instructions here to make this cute costume let your four legged friend join in on the fun.

Oh Scary Skeletons!

If you have a short haired pet, this is the costume for you. Just dab on the white "bones" first, let dry a little and fill in all the gaps with black paint. Instant skeleton pet. If you live on farm land like I do, there are those that even put costumes on their livestock. Nothing like driving past a field full of cow, horse and dog skeletons for a scary good time!

Best DIY Halloween Costumes for You:

These costumes are sure to please.

The unknown couple with confidence...

Here's what we love about this couple... we don't know what they are but they are 100% committed to the part. One would guess that they are some form of escape "artist" from a hippie nature retreat. Whatever they are, I am digging that this is a low cost, do-it-yourself costume that looks great and is a lot of fun. While it might not be the one we will copy exactly, it shows that you can put something fake that was laying around the house right on your head, stick a feature to your belly and add a cardboard prop and have an instant hit if you add a little confidence.

Bid Daddy Minion

Here's a do-it-yourself quickie that can be accomplished with a trip to the goodwill. A simple pair of overalls and a log-in sleeve yellow shirt and beanie, black gloves. You might have to dye it yourself but minions are all the rage. Who says kids get all the fun!

DIY Mason Jar

Not just for for canning anymore! The mason jar has made a huge come back over the last few years. It's now en vogue to sip anything from tea to pop from a real mason jar or the over sized plastic ones modeled after the original. But wait, it doesn't stop there. A big cardboard sign and a little paint all tied up with a nice blue ribbon and you are a walking, talking mason jar. Would it be cute to get a larger mason jar to collect your candy in?

Best DIY Costumed for Your Kids:

DIY Bytar Ninjago Lego Costume – Not Found in Stores!

This blogger has the luckiest kid alive and luckily she shared how she made it with the world. Check out how this mom combined, poster board and craft paint to make this monster the roar of the town. She even added a trash bag option to make him waterproof. It just goes to show, if there is a will there is a way, even when your kid wants a costume not sold in stores. Find Instructions here..

Let them be winged.

Make these simple cut out wings painted to match your fairies personality.

 The $7 Skeleton

Here's how you dress up a boring black shirt and pants. If you are looking for a budget costume that is sure to thrill, frighten and delight, here it is. Most kids have a black t-shirt (even one with writing turned inside out works) and some form of black pants. You can quickly turn that into a fright for Halloween night. Find instructions here.

Finally, the absolute BEST last minute costume for all ages!

Am I the only parent that waited until the very last minute to decide on a Halloween costume? Then have not time to make or buy it? OK, just me. However, if by no fault of yours, say you are last minute invited to a party and you are stuck with nothing to wear. Don't fear... the mummy costume has got you covered. Or all wrapped up you might say.The beloved mummy costume can be made by fastening just about anything white or off-white around your body in something that resembles strips. The thing is, if a mummy were to come back to life and walk around, the strips would start falling off. So there is no need to even wrap yourself well. If you want to add some white powder or paint to your face, it's purely optional. It's pretty much an anything goes costume that can be made in a few minutes. Just grab an old sheet and start ripping them up and wrap it around.

So there you have it, our top 10 for best costumes this year.  Leave a comment with a link to your favorite costume idea...
