Why is California Crime on the Rise?

California Crime is on the RiseIt seems that everywhere we turn these days we are hearing about more and more crime in California. I know anytime you turn on the news there is another story about local crime. There is so much crime in California it seems like the topic is headline news on a daily basis.

Being in the home security business myself, I hear about burglary and vehicle theft often. However, recently I have seen a definite surge in homeowners calling in to get an ADT monitored home security system because they were recently broken into. We have had our Security Consultants invited to neighborhood meetings to help home owners understand their home security options. People are becoming very aware of their need to protect their home and family.

I was having dinner with my family and my sister was telling us about a recent burglary in her neighborhood. The burglar was armed with a knife making it a very dangerous situation. A friend of my wife, just had their car broken into that was parked in their driveway. Identity was stolen and the thieves got a daily planner of the homeowner with personal information including when they are headed on vacation this summer. The burglars also got the work address of the homeowner from the planner and went to the office location, ransacked the place and stole business information. Our friends ended up protecting their home with an ADT Pulse security system and added cameras as well.

My brother is a County Sheriff for Santa Clara County and my cousin is a County Sheriff for Alameda County. They have both seen an increase in property crime and responded to many burglary situations. They both recommend to victims of recent crimes to get a security system installed. My cousin recently injured his hand in an altercation with a burglar they caught. It's always great to hear about thieves getting caught. I appreciate all the officers who are putting their lives on the line to help make our communities a safer place to live.

So what's happening? There is debate as to why the increase in crime throughout California. Let's take a look a some of the stories about why California crime is on the rise.

Cellphone Thefts Rise Rapidly

"In this tech-savvy city teeming with commuters and tourists, the cellphone has become a top target of robbers who use stealth, force and sometimes guns.

Nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco this year are cellphone-related, police say, and most occur on bustling transit lines."

Advisory:

Due to their necessity and high dollar value, cell phones are fast becoming a favorite target of thieves. To reduce your chances of becoming the victim of a cell phone theft or robbery, Los Angeles Police Department offers the following safety tips:

• Always be aware of your surroundings. Thieves may be watching you.
• Ensure your cell phone is enabled with a security password.
• Avoid becoming distracted by your cell phone conversation/texting when walking on the street.
• Keep your cell phone out of sight. Don't hang it from your purse or jacket.
• Switch the ringer off to avoid attracting the attention of thieves.
• Never loan your cell phone to a stranger. In case of an emergency, offer to make the call for them.

Most say, "I never thought it would happen to us," One of our top Security Consultants said recently, "there are only two reasons people do not get a security system... they either can't afford it or they don't think they need it.
