## [ADT Pulse Home Security and the Smart Home](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/200124/adt-pulse-home-security-and-the-smart-home)

![ADT Home Security Smart Home](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/hs-fs/file-1332465827-jpg/images/jetsons-video-chat.jpg?width=500&height=375&name=jetsons-video-chat.jpg "ADT Home Security Smart Home")In September of 1962, the first "[Smart Home](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/?Tag=Home+Automation)" popped onto your television screen. A futuristic glimpse of life in the year 2062.

Who owned this home of the future?  **George and Jane Jetson**. A space age spin-off of the Flintstones, the Jetson's were the first family to have home automation. The TV lowered from the ceiling and projected your phone calls. They had fully automated appliances with food cooked and served at the press of a button. The vacuum even ran by remote control. Lights and [temperature ](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/201217/ADT-Pulse-Thermostats)were controlled by their voice. George said "News", and the newspaper scrolled on the "televiewer". Half a century later the Smart Home of our the space age family is quickly becoming a reality.

With the mass adoption of [smart phones](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/adt-pulse/) and tablets, people are more and more comfortable with automation and technology. Today there's an app for... well everything. Smart phones do things never before expected of a phone, and that expectation is spilling over into every area of life, including your home. In 2012, 3.5 million homes in the United States were considered [Smart Homes](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/199988/ADT-Pulse-Voice-App-gives-a-voice-to-Home-Security).  Just one year later the number of Smart Homes was 5.5 million and 12.4 million homes will be Smart Homes by 2017 as projected by [Statista](http://www.statista.com/statistics/286813/installed-base-of-smart-home-systems-us/).  By 2017, four out of five new homes will be built with Smart Home technologies and one in three existing homes will be Smart Homes.

## So What Exactly is a "Smart Home"?

![ADT Pulse Home Security and the Smart Home](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/hs-fs/hubfs/ADT_Pulse_Pricing_and_Special_Offers_Remote_Interactive_Security_Services.jpg?width=250&name=ADT_Pulse_Pricing_and_Special_Offers_Remote_Interactive_Security_Services.jpg "ADT Pulse Home Security and the Smart Home")Simply put, the Smart Home is a home that makes life more efficient. Not ***just*** easier, but more energy efficient and more time efficient. Also called [Home Automation](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/163954/ADT-Pulse-is-Home-Automation-and-Security), the Smart Home Technologies are applied to systems in your home like [small appliances, lighting and your thermostat](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/191169/Home-Automation-with-ADT-Pulse-Security-Monitoring). This gives them the ability to communicate with an automating device or each other. They are now "smart". In the same way you use a universal remote for multiple TV components, you now control multiple systems in your home with one device!

ADT Pulse Smart Homes also allow "[modes](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/200708/Setting-up-Modes-with-ADT-Pulse)" which trigger multiple tasks at once. Your Smart Home can also conveniently be controlled remotely. Picture yourself on a tropical island, sipping a Mai Tai, while vacation mode runs your home. Oops! You check your smart texts and realize that your knuckle-head son needs to get in and borrow tools. No problem, you can disarm from your iPhone and unlock the door for him. You can even blast the heater so he doesn't hang out and raid the fridge.

Don't forget, you can also add in ADT Pulse surveillance cameras ad keep an eye on his every move.

In fact, not including at least some type of security capability in a home automation system is considered unacceptable by all" - [Icontrol's 2014 State of Smart Home Report.](http://www.icontrol.com/insights/2014-state-smart-home/)

100% of people surveyed deem it **unacceptable** for a Smart Home to not include home security! ## Why ADT Pulse for Your Smart Home?

Here's a few good reasons:

- **Convenience**: Control and  monitor your home from anywhere, at any time from a smart device. With [ADT Pulse App](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/?Tag=ADT+Pulse+Voice+App), you can control your home by voice commands with [Amazon's Echo devices and Alexa](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/alexa-has-a-new-skill-adt-pulse-security-and-home-automation-is-listening).
- **Safety**: Verify house is [armed and doors are locked from anywhere](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/200952/5-Ways-To-Arm-and-Disarm-Your-ADT-Pulse-System-Remotely). See your [kids arrive home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neVswaTPNTo&hd=1). Receive alerts if they aren't home on time. Set up [text and email alerts](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/201068/Setting-up-Text-and-Email-Alerts-with-ADT-Pulse) for specific areas being breached; gun safes or alcohol cabinets. Real time video feed.
- **Sustainability**: With the ability to [automate lighting](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/201258/ADT-Pulse-Light-Switches-Dimmers-and-Modules), [heating, cooling](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/201217/ADT-Pulse-Thermostats), and small appliances, you no longer have to choose between being responsible with your energy resources and being comfortable.
- **Savings**: Automating your lights and thermostat results in savings.  According to [CleanTechnica](http://cleantechnica.com/2013/11/06/home-automation-benefits-infographic/), a light bulb dimmed to 50% makes it last 20 times longer.
- **A company on the cutting edge**: ADT technologies are expanding by the minute! ADT Pulse Voice APP made available earlier this year, allows control with voice commands on any smart device. Over 20 [z-wave enabled](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/adt-pulse/) compatible devices exist to further customize your Smart Home Experience. [Features like ADT Canopy, ADT Chaperone and a partnership with Ford are just a few exciting things on the horizon](https://www.californiasecuritypro.com/blog/bid/197888/ADT-Security-Protection-Using-a-Mobile-Device).
- Voice Control -

And finally, when you watched the Jetsons, you knew some day that had to be your home. Today is that day and we're here to help you.
